Breaking the Stigma in the Fight to Save Lives

Despite recent data that indicates annual HIV acquisitions are generally in decline, and drug treatments for those living with HIV have made major advancements, the fight to increase access to care and improve health outcomes for people living with HIV in the United States continues to be a major public health challenge.

Effective HIV prevention programs, however, have been proven to reduce HIV transmission in vulnerable populations. People who get tested for HIV and learn that they have acquired can make significant behavior changes to improve their health and reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to their sex or drug-using partners. Improving HIV prevention and health outcomes for women and girls will depend on a concerted effort to advance programs, policies, and services that are tailored to the needs of women at federal, state and local levels.
